The Eight General Commands
Encounter Rubric · Disciple · Leader · Church

The aim is not cerebral knowledge. It is people encountering Jesus and growing in intimacy with God (Mt 22:37–38; Jn 17:3; 1 Jn 2:3–6). Obedience is the fruit of that encounter — assessed by love-response, never by willpower.

“This obedience is always in love.” — George Patterson, who warned that obeying God from any other motive turns into legalism
Obedience is our opportunity to tell Jesus, “We love you!”
First & Greatest

Ministry TO the Lord

Seeking God for who He is, not for what He gives. Mary at His feet — the one thing needed.

Mt 22:37–38 · Lk 10:38–42 · Jn 17:3
→
The Overflow

Ministry FOR the Lord

The second is like it: loving people, serving, giving, making disciples — flowing from presence.

Mt 22:39 · Jn 15:4–5
↻
The Return

Back to His presence

Constantly return to M2L. At Antioch they were ministering to the Lord when the Spirit spoke and sent.

Ac 13:2 · Ps 27:4

The flow is M2L → M4L → return to M2L — in every gathering, every command, every scale. When serving crowds out sitting at His feet, the answer is always the return.

Axis 1 — Depth of grasp (KUW)

KnowUnderstandDo

Remember what God says · comprehend what it means for you · live it as a love-response to Him. (Lk 10:26–28)

Axis 2 — Scale of reproduction

DiscipleLeaderChurch

Loving & obeying, helping others do the same · raising others who raise others · a community helping other communities. (2 Ti 2:2)

A person can be mature in one command and new in another. Every new disciple, leader, and church carries the same potential as its parent — a grain of wheat produces a plant equal to the one that sowed it. Release early; don't control the chain.

How to carry it: teach the truth of each command directly (it comes from outside — Ro 10:17); facilitate the Six Encounter Questions without steering (the Spirit supplies in the moment — Jn 14:26). Give fuller input to new disciples; ask more and supply less as they mature.

Held in love: this is voluntary and self-owned, discerned together without condemnation. Celebrate an honest “not yet” as much as obedience — the group is a witness, never a tribunal. Nothing here is a score, a rank, or a reward.

This sheet is a trainer's reference, not the oral disciple's tool. What a new, unlettered disciple actually carries and reproduces is the Six Encounter Questions + the Bible stories + the hand motions (7gc.me/8gchand) — not this page.

First & Greatest — the fountain (Mt 22:37–38)
The Overflow — the second is like it (Mt 22:39) · Commands 2–8 flow from Command 1

The Encounter Engine

How hearts meet Jesus and obedience reproduces. Not knowledge quizzes, not willpower pledges — encounter, love-response, and return. (mh2 sections A, B, D, E, H)

The Six Encounter Questions

The assessment liturgy — used with a Bible story in every gathering
See Him
  • What is God showing us in this story about Himself? What does He care about?
  • What is God showing us about people? How are we like the people in this story?
Love Him
  • What is God saying in this story that encourages me? What is difficult to accept?
  • Is there something you want to say to God right now?
Live for Him
  • How can I show Jesus I love Him?
  • Who can I encourage with this story?
At any point, return to: “What does that show you about the God who's with you?”
Why not “I will…” pledges? Willpower fades and slides into performance. The response question is a love-response to encounter — “How can I show Jesus I love Him?” — and the Love Him questions come before the Live for Him questions, every time.

The Gathering

every time disciples, leaders & communities meet · See Him → Love Him → Live for Him
  1. Pray; ask the Holy Spirit to lead.
  2. Minister TO the Lord together first — seek God for who He is. (Ac 13:2)
  3. Share: What has God shown you since we last met? What have you obeyed? Where have you struggled? Who did you share with?
  4. Read & retell the story from memory — three rounds.
  5. Pause in silence; then the Six Encounter Questions.
  6. Live for Him: What will you do to show Jesus you love Him this week? With whom will you share?
  7. Pray for strength to love and obey Him; bless each other.

The Message & Your Story

Jn 3:16 · Jn 1:12–13 · Mt 22:37–40
SeeShiftSift

See — God loves you and gave everything. Shift — receive Him, become His child. Sift — loving God is first. Then your story: life before Jesus → the gift received → eternal life now. One-minute and three-minute versions, in plain words.

Spiritual Conversations

a step of faith — for God to answer

List people; pray often. Visit; pray for wisdom and boldness. Share your story and the Father's story (Lk 15:11–32). Ask: “What does that show you about the God who's with you?” Listen. Invite them to follow Jesus; meet regularly; give them the guide.

Guard: The Three Levels of Authority

George Patterson's tool, born defending young churches from legalistic attack. It keeps this rubric from ever hardening into tradition-enforcement.

1

Commands of Christ & His apostles

Highest authority. Required of all disciples, in every circumstance; never prohibited.

This rubric assesses ONLY these
2

Apostolic practices

Biblical examples, not commanded — meeting in homes, baptizing the same day, sharing possessions, frequent Lord's Supper. Free to follow; no one may require or prohibit them.

Freedom
3

Human customs

Not in the New Testament. Their only authority is a congregation's voluntary agreement — and only for that congregation. Never judge another group by our customs.

Local only
Warning: most divisions come from treating level 2 and 3 practices as if they were level 1 commands. Mark the command (the what), never its manner (the how/when): Baptize is a command; public or private, immediate or later, is practice. If an item is not a command of Christ or His apostles, it does not belong on this checklist.

Sources & what's mine

7gc.me/mh2 ("Life with God") supplies the Six Encounter Questions, the gathering rhythm, the stories, the practices, and the Disciple / Leader / Church definitions. tothelord.com deepens Command 1 (Love God / Ministry TO the Lord). George Patterson (Church Multiplication Guide, with Richard Scoggins; "The Spontaneous Multiplication of Churches" in Perspectives) is the framework's headwaters: obedience-oriented discipleship, the basic commands, the Three Levels of Authority, Paul–Timothy chains.

My judgment, not the sources': sorting items into Know / Understand / Do and phrasing each Do at the three scales. Command names and references are verbatim as you set them.
